What are Soap Nuts?

Soap nuts are fruits from Sapindus trees, a genus in the lychee family that grows in South Asia.

Soap nuts contain a substance called saponin which acts as a natural detergent.

Soaps (and detergents) contain a phospholipid molecule where one end is attracted to water and the other to oil. This makes it possible for oil and water to mix, so the oil can be washed off. Which is why we use products with phospholipids to clean!

And no...you can't eat them :>

One great way to use soap nuts is for laundry. Soap nuts are more earth-friendly than traditional detergents because they are completely biodegradable, but still very effective. Plus, they are completely renewable, whereas traditional laundry detergents are typically petroleum-based. They are also really easy to use. Simply place 4-5 soap nuts in a small cloth bag and add them to your laundry when you put the load in the washing machine.

Soap nuts can be reused 3 to 5 times, and the bag can be reused over and over. Your clothes will turn out just as clean and fresh as if you used your normal laundry detergent. The spent soap nuts are 100% biodegradable so you can added them to your compost pile - and they won't end up polluting waterways like phosphate detergents. For people more familiar with liquid laundry soap, there is also liquefied soap nuts which provide an alternative, but equally effective method of using soap nuts to wash clothing.
